Job Description

The School of Forestry at Northern Arizona University seeks a Post-Doctoral Candidate to develop and test the use of remotely sensed data to estimate the amount of volume and biomass to be removed in restoration activities across large scales. The research would include developing processes and workflows that would allow aerial-based LiDAR data to provide these estimates. Metrics will then be validated to assess their associated uncertainty. This position specifically will:

Data Analysis and Mapping - 60%
  • Develop methodologies and workflow to use aerial LiDAR, existing field cruising data, and prescription information to estimate volume and biomass of various size classes that would likely be removed under Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) restoration prescriptions.
  • Quantify the uncertainty/error for estimates of the developed methodologies and output metrics.
  • Map the resulting modeled layers at stand/project scales across planned treatment areas.

Dissemination of Results and Project Outcomes - 25%
  • Publish results and associated products, including a peer-reviewed manuscript, map/data layers, and documentation of methodologies/code/simulation information for future replication.
  • Present research results at professional meetings and conferences and report on the findings to the funding agency.

Mentoring - 10%
  • Perform mentoring to undergraduate and graduate students and staff.

Other - 5%
  • Other project related work as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in landscape ecology, forest ecology, forest biometrics, or related field.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using remotely sensed datasets.
  • Experience in LiDAR datasets and associated processing and analysis software.
  • Experience with landscape ecology and spatial analysis and mapping.
  • Experience or familiarity with large national datasets.
  • A record of scientific publication.
  • Experience with collaborative interdisciplinary research.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of forest ecology and remote sensing tools.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in research design and analytical techniques in machine learning and modeling.
  • Demonstrated technical writing ability and good communication skills.
  • Familiarity with western forest systems.


Background Information

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $64,474 to $68,474. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

Post-Doctoral Scholars are hired on a contract basis, renewable each fiscal year for a maximum of 4 renewals (5 years) according to terms of the Arizona Board of Regents' Conditions of Post-Doctoral Service. NAU offers an excellent benefit package to Post-Doctoral Scholars including generous health, dental and vision insurance; 10 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Participation in NAU retirement plans is not available to Post-Doctoral Scholars.
