Description
A. Course Objective:
The testing that is conducted by Medical Laboratory Technicians plays an important role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of many diseases. Medical Laboratory Technicians are responsible for collecting and cross-matching blood specimens, culturing and staining bacteria, and making microscopic and chemical examinations of bodily fluids. Upon completion, graduates will have acquired the skills required for entry-level positions in a variety of healthcare settings.
Medical Laboratory Technician training is designed to provide students with a strong education in laboratory concepts, theory and applications. Students will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as hematology, phlebotomy, microbiology, anatomy & physiology, immunology and more. This is a high demand, bright outlook occupation, which is expected to grow over 22% in the next 10 years(higher than average) according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. An increase in the aging population will lead to a greater need to diagnose medical conditions, such as cancer or type 2 diabetes, through laboratory procedures. Medical laboratory technicians collect specimens and perform routine manual and automated blood tests. They prepare specimens for microscope examination and operate various laboratory equipment including chemistry analyzers, hematology analyzers, and blood culture incubators. They can work in several areas of the laboratory or specialize in just one.
