A.Course Objective:
Description. The Medical Office Specialist Training Program is an 11-wk. Program of full time instruction with a total of 309 clock hrs. designed to provide students with the necessary skills to obtain entry level employment in a medical facility. Students are cross trained in both the clinical and administrative duties that are required to work effectively and productively in the medical setting. Students will receive didactic, theoretical and factual information via classroom lecture, demonstration of clinical skills, perform research, classroom presentations, develop a variety of patient teaching plans and a thorough understanding of pharmacology and medication administration.Units of study include, but not limited to, computer skill training, vital signs, ECG’s Laboratory testing, blood draws, injections, pharmacology, anatomy & physiology, coding, appointment scheduling, CPR & First Aid, psychology and medical record management- both paper & electronic.
This program adheres to the National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) and Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) standards. Successful students will be eligible to sit for both the CCMA & the CMAA certification examinations. The program is approved by the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education. Regional Center for Border Health Inc. College of Health Careers holds an institutional accreditation by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools.
Competencies to be achieved: Introduction to Medical Assisting, Ambulatory Care Administration, Medical Office Administrative Functions, Billing and Coding Procedure Fundamentals of Clinical Medical Assisting, Assisting with Medications, Assisting with Medical Specialties, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid, Diagnostic Procedures, Assisting with Surgeries, Career Development, Externship.

G.Additional information. Background check requirements for licensing and background restrictions for working in the occupation. According to the Arizona Medical Board, Medical assistants are not licensed in Arizona and certification is not required.
Other requirements needed: High School Diploma or GED. TB test required prior to placing student in a clinical field. Pass the Test for Adult Basic Education. The TABE Test is a diagnostic test used to determine a student’s skill levels and aptitudes. Students must obtain 8.0 score in order to enroll in classes at the College of Health Careers and or under the discretion of the President & CEO student may be admitted to the program.
