Program Synopsis Firefighting Operations Certificate
Program Location: Signal Peak Campus
Course Objective:
Description: The Firefighter Operations Certificate of Completion is designed to prepare future firefighters for a career in the fire service. The program curriculum and course of instruction will provide the student with the knowledge and skills to effectively perform the essential functions of an entry level firefighter. Upon successful completion of FSC140 Firefighter I and II and FSC129 Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations, students sit for the State proctored written and practical skills examinations; successful students will be awarded State of Arizona certification through the Arizona Center for Fire Service Excellence Fire Service Accreditation.
Competencies to be achieved:
* Evaluate the characteristics of fire behavior and extinguishing agents. (Evaluation Level)
* Examine the theory of fire behavior, phases of fire and compare methods of fire control. (Analysis Level)
*Demonstrate the methods of attacking, controlling and extinguishing various types of fires. (Application Level)
* Predict the impacts of public relations that will influence the strategies of fire suppression and property conservation. (Application Level)
* Analyze the policies and procedures that govern the practical application of modern firefighting and common terminology at the local and National levels. (Analysis Level)
* Critique the resource deployment practices of fire suppression organizations, basic fire fighting tactics and strategies. (Evaluation Level)
* Categorize fire service resources, equipment and apparatus to determine their functions on an emergency incident. (Synthesis Level)
* Explain and critique the components of fire prevention including code enforcement, public information, and public and private fire protection systems. (Evaluation Level)
* Analyze the environmental factors of Wildland Fire that affect the start and spread of wildfire. (Analysis Level)
* Explain and demonstrate the maintenance, safety and efficient use of wildland fire suppression personal protective equipment. (Application Level)
* Analyze the application of common wildland fire terms. (Analysis Level)
* Demonstrate the ability to extricate and immobilize a patient from an automobile using extrication tools. (Application Level)
Total Cost of Program (include all costs to student including testing, state certification):
Tuition (In-State) 16 x $75 = $ 1,200
Tuition (Out of State) 16 x $150 = $ 2,400
Pre-Degree Requirements: (Before applying to the program, students need to have completed the following):
* EMS125 Emergency Medical Technician or EMT Certificate must be completed prior to acceptance to the program.
* FSC129 Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations
* FSC134 Fitness and Conditioning for Firefighters
* Complete the above OR Program Director consent

* Wildland Fire Fighter (Joseph D. Lowe)
* Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills (National Fire Protection Association)
