A. Course Objective:
Description: Learn firefighting skills, prepare for the day-to-day demands of the profession and learn to cope with challenges in the field. This degree prepares students to move toward managerial and command positions.
Competencies to be achieved: Upon successful completion of the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education AAS degree program, the learner will be able to:
• Describe the history, careers, training & education in the fire service, in addition to fire department resources, the dynamics of fire, how building construction can impact fire, codes and ordinances, fire protection systems, strategy and tactics, incident management systems & support for the vital functions of the fire service
• Demonstrate knowledge of fire chemistry, combustion, extinguishing agents, and the foundation for firefighting strategies and tactics
• Describe the loads & forces, plans & codes, building materials, components & systems, construction types, manufactured assemblies, size up, collapse and the command of a collapse incident
• Demonstrate an understanding of career opportunities in fire prevention, the importance of public education, the need for public fire protection, the chemistry & physics of fire, how to prevent fires, support organizations, fire department resources, training, codes and ordinances, protection systems & equipment and emergency management
• Describe how accountability, application of risk management techniques, elimination of unsafe acts, implementation of training & certification standards, development of medical and fitness standards, a research agenda, use of technology, investigation of prior incidents, the blending of grants and safety, response standards, response examination, emotional support, public education, fire sprinklers and engineering safety into equipment impact the safety and survival of fire fighters
