Diploma – Phlebotomy Technician 27.5 Credits 646 Contact Hours 34 weeks
A. The Phlebotomy Technician Program is designed to prepare the students to obtain blood specimens from patients for the purpose of testing and analyzing. The Phlebotomy Technician works in a drawing station, clinics or medical laboratories under the direction of the laboratory supervisor. The job requires manual dexterity and additional skills in communication and clerical duties. Upon completion of the Phlebotomy Technician program, graduates will: 1. Explain the function and structure of the capillaries, veins and arteries, and identify the names and locations of veins suitable for venous and capillary blood collections. 2. Demonstrate safe and effective use of equipment and supplies used for blood collection and specimen transport. 3. Demonstrate a knowledge of government and industry standards related to the collection of blood. 4.Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients related to the collection of blood. Students in the Phlebotomy Technician program may attend Day or Evening session Monday through Thursday at 4 hours per day for the Classroom and Lab Coursework. After successful completion of all classroom coursework, the student is scheduled to complete 160 clock hours (full time Mon-Fri) of Clinical Practicum/Externship in a Health Care Facility giving the student on the job training to enhance their classroom experience. Lifetime Placement Assistance is available to all Graduates. G. Additional information: Must be a citizen of the United States or an eligible non-citizen as classified by the Department of Homeland Security. Prerequisites: 18 years of age at the time of admission and possess a high school diploma or GED (or equivalent) Other Requirements: Allied health students are required to demonstrate completion of immunizations paid by Brookline College. Requirements are as follows: two (2) MMR in a lifetime, two (2) Varicella, Tetanus vaccine less than 10 years old, at least the first two (2) series of Hepatitis B, and Negative PPD (TB) or a negative chest X-ray done within the past year. Brookline College will not pay for an X-ray if student had positive TB skin test that requires an annual chest X-ray. They will also be required to complete a background check and, if applicable, finger print clearance; Refer to the Catalog for a complete list
