PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN


SYNOPSIS


A. Course Objective (Description; Competencies to be achieved)


The Phlebotomy Technician Program is a 2-week program with a total of 40 clock hours that works under the supervision of a license medical laboratory technician, physician, or other individual with an advanced degree in the biomedical or related sciences. The Phlebotomy Technician primary function is to collect blood specimens from patients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Techniques used for this blood collection are taught which includes patient’s preparation, processing, safety and regulatory compliance. The training program prepares the student for employment as phlebotomy technician. Students will identify and greet patients in a respectful, compassionate way; Identify regulations and regulatory bodies such as HIPPA, OSHA, &CLIA; Understand and apply standard Blood Borne Pathogen infection control practices; Perform Quality Control procedures for CLIA waived tests; Apply safety rules regarding the use and disposal of sharps; Explain and perform specimen labeling for laboratory analysis; Obtain blood samples utilizing various methods depending upon the test ordered; Be able to explain the procedure for obtaining capillary blood samples; Be able to explain the procedure for obtaining venous blood samples.


Requirements: Must be an active AZ Certified Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Assistant or have college level health education such as Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Nursing Chemistry (not all inclusive).Students are required to be at least 18 of age, have a High School Diploma or GED Certification, Pass the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE): Students must obtain 8.0 score in order to enroll in classes at the College of Health Careers and/or under the discretion of the President & CEO student may be admitted to the program
