A. Course Objective:
Description: The Nursing Assistant training program curriculum was developed by the Nursing Assistant Advisory Committee and approved by the Arizona State Board of Nursing on January 27th , 2006. The curriculum incorporates Article 8 Nursing Assistants rules implemented on December 5th, 2005 and meets requirements of R4-19-802 (B)(l) through (8)(4) and R4-19-802 (C) (1) through (C) (14).
Several scheduling options are available: weekdays (Monday through Wednesday 9a-2pm.Skills on Thursday 8am- 4:30 pm), evenings (Monday through Wednesday 4p-9pm Skills on Thursday 8am- 4:30 pm), and weekends (Saturday & Sunday 7:30a- 4pm -8 weeks) .
An Accelerated Program is also available to those meeting AZBN requirements as noted in the prerequisite list below. The Program is compliant with AZBN requirements, and is a total of 120 hours: classroom (50 hours), skills lab (30 hours) and Clinical experience 20 hours in Rehab and 20 hours in the Hospital (40 hours) over a 6 week period.
Prerequisites for entry into the program include:
- an entry exam testing basic reading comprehension and math skills
- proof of S. Citizenship or residency (driver's license, birth certificate, passport, U.S. ID card, certificate of naturalization
- Level one Fingerprint card for Nursing homes
- Urine drug screen -must be negative
- TB Test or Chest Xray- no evidence of active TB
- Medical clearance form signed by medical professional
- High School diploma or GED
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support CPR / AED for Healthcare Professionals- can be obtained during program prior to Clinical experience
- Advanced N.A. program requires verification of direct care hours with minimum of 1080 hours direct "hands-on" care within a 5 year period. As per the Declaration of Emergency issued due to the Covid pandemic by Gov.Ducey on March 11,2020, a process of temporary waiver of applicable professional license requirements has been put into place, allowing those employed as Temporary Nursing Assistants during the pandemic to be eligible for entry into an accelerated nursing assistant program.
Competencies to be achieved:
There are 18 didactic competencies required by AZBN:
- Functions as a member of the health team within the healthcare facility and/or community
- Demonstrates ethical & legal behavior that maintains Resident's rights Assists in identifying the mental health & social service needs of residents
- Demonstrates effective communication
- Maintains a safe environment for the resident and others
- Demonstrates general principles of infection control Provides basic emergency care
- Applies the principles of basic nutrition to resident care
- Provides the resident with personal care and grooming
- Measures vital signs
- Demonstrates safe transfers, positioning & turning of residents using effective body mechanics
- Cares for cognitively impaired residents
- Identifies the function, structure, common health problems, and normal aging changes of each of the 10 body systems
- Provides for comfort & rest
- Assists with diagnostic tests
- Provides care for the preoperative resident and / or resident with special needs
- Assists in admission/ transfer/ discharge of the resident
- Provides care for residents & family when death is eminent
There is also a classroom & clinical site checklist provided by AZBN for items to be checked off as completed by the instructor, as completed including but not limited to 21 demonstration skills.
