Description
A. Course Objective
Description: Develop skills through classroom and clinical experience to become a Surgical Technologist. Surgical Technologists prepare operating rooms, arrange equipment, and help doctors during surgeries. You will also be well-prepared to take the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Certified Surgical Technologist examination.

- Interact & function effectively within teams, foster open communication, mutual respect & shared decision-making to ensure high quality patient care, providing compassionate & coordinated care based on patient’s needs
- Promote lifelong learning, staying relevant & supporting a culture of evidence-based practice while demonstrating surgical conscience in utilizing sterile technique & infection control; foster a willingness to learn, take the initiative & ability to adapt
- Use information & technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error & support decision-making
- Minimize risk of harm to patients in perioperative routines, through both system effectiveness & individual performance
- Use data to monitor patient care outcomes in surgical environment to continuously improve the quality & safety of the surgical environment
- Foster an environment of ethical, legal, moral & medical values related to patient & operating room team during the perioperative experience
- Champion best practice in the surgical environment through coordination of necessary supplies, instrumentation & equipment for specific procedures
- Foster organization, preparation, memorization, observation & listening skills in preparing operating rooms, arranging equipment, setting up appropriate instruments, passing instruments to surgeons & anticipating surgeon’s needs. Perform surgical scrub, gowning & gloving, draping techniques, holding retractors, suctioning blood, cutting suture & placing dressings. Improve upon manual dexterity in all actions.
- Synthesize concepts of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology & microbiology in your role as a surgical technologist
- Foster critical thinking to create solutions & employ them
- Foster professionalism, including dedication, reliability, communication & teamwork
- Foster the ability to handle stressful & emergency situations appropriately, think & act quickly yet accurately
- Are well prepared to take the NBSTSA CST national certification exam
B. Total cost:
In-state tuition $9,493.06 out-of-state (5 semesters; 4 program semesters & 1 prep course semester)
Note: Cost may vary per student depending on courses already taken by student when looking to apply
Most support courses may be taken online which reduces cost of tuition by $19/credit for support courses

- Matching warm-up scrub jacket (front-snap, must come from PCC Desert Vista Campus Bookstore, embroidered with PCC logo/program name)

Background check required: Yes, AZ DPS Fingerprint Clearance card, $70
Other requirements needed:
- Pass a urine toxicology screening exam.
- Be able to perform a number of physical activities in the clinical portion of the program
- Present proof of immunization or immunity for MMR/Varicella/Hep-B/TDaP (MMR (2) ; Tdap (less than 10 yrs)
- Show proof of 2-step negative TB skin test or negative chest x-ray for TB.
- Current year Influenza Immunization, or free through insurance
- Maintain health insurance throughout enrollment in the program. Cost varies (not included in cost above)
- Maintain current CPR card throughout program enrollment,
