Description
The Phlebotomy Program at Sumner College focuses on providing you with the skills, knowledge and clinical competence you need to work in this field in a safe educational environment. Your success in your chosen field is our number one priority.
Course Objective: This course provides students with the fundamentals in the performance of a variety of blood collections and other body fluid collection methods using proper technique and universal precautions. It includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary puncture, butterfly needles, blood culture and specimen collection on adults, children and infants, performing various CLIA waived tests and an introduction to hemodialysis. Emphasis will be on infection prevention; proper patient identification; quality assurance; specimen handling; processing and accessioning. Topics include professionalism, ethics, basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and HIPAA regulations

Competencies to be achieved:
- State the duties of a phlebotomist
- Define ethics as it applies to laboratory profession
- Define essential medical terminology as it relates to phlebotomy
- Discuss the primary organization of hematology, chemistry, serology/immunology, microbiology and
urinalysis
- Describe the appropriate collection and handling of specimens, including various types of additives used
- Describe special precautions necessary and substances that can interfere in the clinical analysis of blood
constituents
- List the components of the chain of infection and the safety precautions that break the chain
- Define Universal Precautions
- Demonstrate understanding of HIPAA standards and how it relates to the laboratory
- Demonstrate the proper technique to perform syringe, venipuncture and capillary punctures on adults,
children and infants
- Demonstrate CLIA waived tests

Refund Policy
Refund amount are based on the student’s last day of attendance. When determining the number of weeks completed by the student, the institution may consider a partial week the same as if a whole week were completed, provided the student was present at least one day during the scheduled week. After 50% the period of financial obligation is completed by the student, the institution may retain the full tuition for that period.
