PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN (CERT.PLB)
Program Objective: Prepares participant to have the technical skills needed to enter the healthcare industry as an entry-level phlebotomist.
Program Description:
Phlebotomy Technician program is designed to teach the knowledge in technical and procedural aspects of basic phlebotomy, including collection of blood specimens and venipuncture required to become a Phlebotomy technician. The Phlebotomy Technician program includes theory and hands-on instruction.
Competencies to be achieved (16 credits):
AHE 101 Medical Terminology (3 Credits): This course is designed for individuals who are employed in human services and allied health agencies. Students will develop a working knowledge of words that relate to body systems, anatomical structures, medical processes and procedures, and a variety of disease conditions.
AHE 119 The Basics of Body Structure and Function (4 Credits): Orientation to basic body structure and functions as appropriate for the health care setting. Includes organization of the human body, body systems, and major organs. Also includes common disorders associated with each body system and what testing and analysis may be used to determine common disease. Students may take BIO 160 Intro to Human Anatomy and Physiology as a substitute for AHE 119.
CIS 120 Intro to Comp Info Syst/GE (3 Credits): Includes description of computer hardware and software, computer terminology, the data processing cycle, and characteristics of programming languages, with emphasis on the use of applications software in processing business data.
PLB 101 Phlebotomy Technician Training (6 Credits): Students will gain skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper venipuncture techniques and standard precautions. Includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults.
