Course Objective:
The focus of the program is to help students understand the basics of the HVAC industry and the best ways to enter the field as an entry level technician or installer with the understanding of career, safety, proper test equipment uses and diagnostic/repair procedures. Students will learn how to communicate with contractors, homeowners, and co-workers.
Description:
Competencies to be achieved:
* Understand the basic concepts of BTUs, heat transfer, sensible and latent heat, PSIG as it applies to pressure measurements, and the forms of energy as it applies to the HVAC industry.
* Understand Ohms Law, the different functions of a Digital Multi Meter, series and parallel circuits, conductors, switches, inductive and resistive loads, and troubleshooting non-functioning electrical circuits.
* Understand the testing procedures for components of and AC system including but not limited to, capacitors, contactors, compressors, fan motors, blower motors, and control boards.
* Effectively identify proper safe operational and functional inspection and testing procedures for a split system.
* Understand the proper operation and diagnosis of an air handler.
* Understand the proper operation and diagnosis of a heat pump.
* Understand the proper operation and diagnosis of a gas furnace. Including control board error codes, gas pressure adjustments and combustion analysis.
* Effectively recover refrigerant from a non-operational and operational outside unit.
* Effectively perform deep evacuation of a unit after a repair.
* Properly balance the refrigerant charge for peak performance of an air conditioning system.
* Safely cut, swage, bend, and braze copper tubing to make leak proof joints.
* Effectively set up and use Oxygen/Acetylene and Air/Acetylene torches.
* Understand and practice safely climbing to and working on rooftop units.
* Understand the basic concepts of cutting and installing start collars on a supply plenum, running, and properly sealing flexible ductwork to supply registers.
* Complete testing for EPA Section 608 Universal Certification.
