Program Synopsis Basic Emergency Medical Technician Certificate

Program Location: Superstition Mountain Campus

Course Objective:
Description: Emergency Medical Technician Certificate of Completion for students who have current proof of AHA Basic Life Support or ASHI Professional Rescuer Card, and subsequently complete NUR200, EMS125 (Emergency Medical Technician), and EMS125A.

Pre-requisite: CPR Certification, Students must show proof of a 10th-grade reading level as required by ADHS. Proof of reading proficiency can be verified by completion of ENG101, SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 480 or greater, ACT score of 22 or greater in reading, or a score of 80% or more on the Reading Comprehension section of the HESI exam.

Competencies to be achieved
* Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate solutions to ethical situations in the prehospital setting. (Creating Level) 
* Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to perform an appropriate primary/initial assessment of the ill or injured patient in the prehospital setting.  (Evaluating Level)

Objectives below are as defined by EMT-Basic: National Standard Curriculum Instructor's Course Guide

* Recognize the nature and seriousness of the patient's condition or extent of injuries to assess requirements for emergency medical care. (Evaluating Level)
* Administer appropriate emergency medical care based on assessment findings of the patient's condition. (Evaluating Level)
* Lift, move, position, and otherwise handle the patient to minimize discomfort and prevent further injury.  (Applying Level)
* Perform safely and effectively the expectations of the job description.  (Applying Level)

Background check requirements for licensing and background restrictions for working in the occupation:
Students are required complete a criminal background check, health and drug screening, and show proof of health insurance.
The student must have vaccinations required by our clinical partners to include TB Skin test within the last 6 months, MMR, Tetanus, and Diphtheria within the last 5 years.

Testing for the National Registry of EMT’s exam $70
