Description

A. Description: This program combines the two HIT programs: Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist AND Certified Billing and Coding Specialist for a reduced cost. The program consists of three courses: UHIT 195, UHIT 101, and the 21stCentury Skillscourse, Creative Problem Solving. This program is designed to prepare students for the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) and the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) national certification exam with the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) for positions such as Medical Records Specialists, Health Information Technologists, Medical Registrars, Medical Billing Specialists, Health Information Technologists, or Medical Coding Specialists.  


Learners will receive an overview of healthcare delivery systems, an introduction to Health Information Management Systems (HIMS), medical terminology, health insurance, medical billing, and an introduction to medical coding that includes ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II.   For detailed information, see the individual program descriptions PimaFastTrack: HIT: Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist and PimaFastTrack: Health Information Technologies HIT: Medical Billing & Coding


Competencies:



  1. Identify collections, PHI, registration procedures, and electronic health records (EHR) interoperability and standards.

  2. Determine how the law is applied to healthcare practices and health records as legal documents

  3. Apply terms utilized with EHR systems and federal regulations such as HIPAA and HITECH.

  4. Identify health insurance plans and how it affects the provider, employee, patient, and policyholder.

  5. Identify estimated costs associated with patient care after insurance reimbursement.

  6. Determine when insurance verification, preauthorizations, referrals, and patient encounters should be completed.

  7. Distinguish differences between ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and billing claim forms.

  8. Apply policies and procedures for the use of data required in health care reimbursement.

  9. Evaluate the revenue cycle management process.

  10. Explain the organization of the ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS tabular lists, indices, tables, and guidelines.

  11. Apply ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS codes according to current guidelines.

  12. Apply word structures to divide and build medical words.

  13. Apply medical terminology to each body system.
