Description
Program Objective: Participants will demonstrate basic knowledge in corrections that will prepare them for an entry-level position within the field.
Description: This program is a 7-week certification process that introduces Detention Officers to the proper and required techniques and procedures followed by Detention and Corrections professionals in the State of Arizona.
Participants will learn all the necessary requirements of correctional law, jail liabilities, inmate rights, jail procedures, less-lethal munitions, use of force, inmate classification, and physical and mental requirements needed to be certified as a detention officer in the state of Arizona.
Competencies to be achieved:
Introduction to correctional operations as well as an overview of ethics and professionalism, communication, custody and control, conflict and crisis management, and medical and mental health issues.
In addition to ethics and professionalism, problem solving, officer integrity, hostage survival, riot control measures, defensive tactics, CPR/AED for first responders, and field experience.
The list of topics covered are: Physical Conditioning Training, Effective Study Habits, Interpersonal Communications, Basic Inmate Supervision, Correctional Law, Sexual Harassment, Bloodborne Pathogens, Civil Lawsuits, Contraband Control, Facility Security, Inmate Grievances, Stress and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, Games Inmates Play, Internal Affairs process, Victim’s Rights, Gangs and Security Threat Groups, Booking and Intake Procedures, Fingerprinting Techniques, Special Needs and Emotionally Disabled Persons, Fire Protocols, Use of Force, In-Custody Deaths, Officer Safety / Officer Survival, Inmate Disciplinary Procedures, Crime Scene Management and Evidence Collection, Transport Procedures, Restraint Devices, Overview of the Criminal Justice System and Courtroom Testimony, Defensive Tactics, Less-Lethal Munitions, Conflict Resolution, Problem Solving, Forced Cell Extractions, Hostage Negotiations, and Cell Searches and Search Procedures.

Background check requirements for licensing and background restrictions for working in the occupation:
Participants must be at least 18 years of age and must be sponsored by either a Tribal, City, or County Law enforcement agency. Participants must be in good physical condition and maintain both the minimum academic and physical standards and must be able to assimilate within the structured environment of a para-military academy setting.
Other requirements needed:
A person shall meet the following minimum qualifications before being appointed to or attending a detention academy:
Be a United States citizen or legally able to work in the United States;
Be at least 18 years of age prior to attending the academy;
Be a high school graduate or have successfully completed a General Education Development (G.E.D.) examination;
Not have been convicted of a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Arizona;
Not have been dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces;
Not have illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or transported for sale marijuana;
Not have illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or transported for sale a dangerous drug or narcotic;
Successfully passed a polygraph examination;
Successfully passed a drug screening test; and
Successfully passed any minimum written or physical qualifications for appointment by the participants hiring agency.
G. Refund Policy (provide a summary if Refund policy is not listed on school website): A 100% refund will be granted if a request is made at least 2 business days prior to the start of class. A 50% refund will be issued will be issued if notice is received less than 2 business days prior to the start of class.
