Description
Program Objective: Train for a career as an executive assistant. You'll learn MBA-level business management skills and prepare for the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) exam offered by the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).
Description: An executive assistant needs a broad skill set to be able to provide direct support to their organization's leadership. If you're pursuing a career as an executive assistant, this course will prepare you for the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) and teach you key business management skills. This body of knowledge will help you thrive in an executive assistant role in any corporate office setting.
You will learn the intricacies of organizational communication, office and records management, and human resources fundamentals, among other topics. You'll also gain an understanding of financial and accounting terms, successful negotiation strategies, the marketing process, employment law, compliance and regulatory requirements, and licensing, permits, and taxes.
Competencies to be achieved:
- Develop basic practical and managerial skills
- Explore important topics in running operations in accord with legal requirements
- Learn about how taxes affect a business, whether it's a sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation
- Understand the process of negotiating, evaluate negotiation styles, and consider successful negotiation strategies for most environments
- Know the seven management disciplines essential to business success
- Effective organizational and business communication
- The fundamentals of administrative roles including human resources, financial responsibilities, and event and project management
- Essential workplace skills
- Prepare for the IAAP Certified Administrative Professional exam

Course Requirements:
There are no course prerequisites but students should have basic keyboarding and computer skills, be comfortable navigating the internet and using email, and have an understanding of a word-processing program.
Certification Requirements:
You must have previous experience as an administrative assistant to be eligible to sit for the Certified Administrative Professional certification exam.
Candidates must meet specific education and administrative office support professional experience, which are:
No College Degree - 4 years of relevant work experience is required
Associates Degree - 3 years of relevant work experience is required
Bachelor's Degree - 2 years of relevant work experience is required
Relevant work experience must include the majority of the following:
- Verbal and written communication with both internal and external clients
- Business writing, proofreading, editing
- Records management
- Meeting planning, travel planning
- Project management
- Human resource activities, hiring, compliance
- Budgeting, accounting functions
